6. LINGUISTIC MULTISENSORY PROTOCOL

BUTTERFLY LINGUISTIC INSTRUCTION

Butterfly-Effect Teaching supports an individualised, multi-sensory, structured, systematic and sequential linguistic remediation approach for dyslexia and other learning difficulties.

This approach specifically targets difficulties at the foundations of linguistics; sound identification and phonemic awareness- the skill that allows a child to segment a word to smaller counterparts, i.e. letter-sounds/ phonemes, the ability to manipulate these, order them in sequence and effectively decode.

It aims to correct common dyslexia-related behavioural symptoms, like for example:

  • Phonemic reversals

  • Insertions

  • Omissions

  • Incorrect phonemic & consonant decoding

  • Difficulties in blending

  • Poor visual scanning

  • Poor visual-spatial awareness

  • Poor pencil control

  • Compromised body posture

There are 6 successive Levels that shape the instruction, commencing from simple Letter & Sound Naming, blending, CVC pseudo-/word combinations that the child undergoes. First, lower linguistic foundations of the English language (Levels A & B) are being covered. Once this goal has been achieved, a smooth transition to CCVC or CVCC pseudo-/words, triple blends (Levels C & D) follows, leading to multi-syllabics, etc. (Levels E & F).

As remediation unfolds in a direct and linguistically-rational manner, the child is able to strengthen her/his foundations and progressively work on accuracy, fluency and mastery. As such, the child is being exposed to, and is able to touch on higher cognitive skills (from Level D onwards).

How is Linguistic Remediation structured online?

Instruction is being delivered via an online platform at a date and time of your preference. It lasts an hour per session and consists of the following:

  • Mindfulness (A few moments of silence to centre the mind and set the intention for the session)

  • Body posture check

  • Reading (Remediation material provided by Butterfly-Effect Teaching)

  • Spelling (Remediation material provided by Butterfly-Effect Teaching)

  • Dictation (Remediation material provided by Butterfly-Effect Teaching)

  • Handwriting (Remediation material provided by Butterfly-Effect Teaching)

  • Comprehension – once the chid has reached Level D (Remediation material provided by Butterfly-Effect Teaching)

  • Punctuation & Grammar (once the chid has reached Level E (Remediation material provided by Butterfly-Effect Teaching)

  • Writing – once the chid has reached Level E (Remediation material provided by Butterfly-Effect Teaching)

What is the number of Linguistic Remediation sessions per week?

The number of sessions varies from one to three per week and is determined by the child’s baseline performance on the assessment battery administered and the severity of dyslexia symptoms.

Ten to fifteen minutes of daily homework accompany the child’s learning journey, establish a healthy and positive learning routine and shape a successful, responsible and independent learner.

Five degrees of Butterfly Initiations inspire, accompany and reward each child’s learning journey into Remediation, preparing them for the moment when they will flap their golden wings and fly away.
